Woman rushed to hospital after eating 32 sushi rolls from buffet
Talk about being “on a roll”.
Twenty-four-year-old Danielle Shapiro planned a trip to have dinner with her friend at Sushi 85 restaurant, a $50 All-you-can-eat sushi buffet in Mountain View, California.
If you were to attend an all-you-can-eat buffet, would you get your $50 fair value? Shapiro felt the same, which is why she decided to eat 32 sushi rolls. I don’t know if she was calculating, but it’s about $1.56 per roll.
Shapiro was documenting on TikTok all the food she consumed during her two-hour sushi dining experience.
She started with a miso soup appetizer, four gyozas, and jalapeño poppers. She then moved on to sushi, eight green dragon rolls, eight snow rolls, eight California rolls, eight wakame rolls, and a serving of edamame.
It looks like sushi heaven, however, after Shapiro’s huge meal, something started to feel off.
Immediately after dinner we were so full we had to sit in my car for about 30 minutes before driving home. My stomach was very tight from all the sushi and probably the rice expanding in my stomach.
That night, she went to her boyfriend’s house, where she began to experience a painful stomach ache. At first she didn’t think much about it, as she knew she was consuming a large amount of food, but when she woke up the next morning with severe pain in her stomach and chest, she knew something was wrong.
Shapiro’s boyfriend and grandmother drove her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with acid reflux, a condition in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, leading to heartburn. Fortunately, she received medicine from the hospital to relieve her pain.
After the treatment, Shapiro admitted it took several days to recover and feel normal again. Despite her painful experience, she can’t stop eating her favorite dish.
I will definitely eat sushi again! This experience didn’t ruin the sushi for me, nor did the all you can eat sushi experience. I learned that next time I had to listen to my body and take things slow.
