Having built a loyal following at Neal’s Yard since it opened seven years ago, Wild Food Cafe is expanding and opening a new location in Islington by the end of the year. Taking up the space left vacant by 100 Islington up Upper Street, the new site will offer much more space than the original, allowing founders Joel and Aiste Gazdur to add plenty of new dishes to the menu – this also means that they ‘I will take reservations.
Overall, the focus will be on nutritious, plant-based dishes using organic and forage ingredients. The menu will follow a traditional three-course format, with entrees including ‘Pulled Jackfruit Sandwich Bites’ – Raw Walnut Zucchini Bread, Little Jewel, Black Garlic Cashew Cheese, BBQ Pulled Jackfruit ; “Royal oyster scallops” – oyster mushrooms, herb and garlic dip, wild purslane; and ‘Wabi-Sabi Kale Salad’ – grilled squash, sunflower seed sour cream, probiotic kimchi, chestnuts, avocado, wakame.
For the main course, there will be ‘Living Laksa’, a vegan version of the Malaysian national dish, which combines coconut broth with galangal, lemongrass, ginger, nori, squash and ‘ Queen of the Forest ”, a coconut-seared plantain stew with Romanesco, black rice, amaranth, cocoa nibs and Brazil nuts. They also promise gluten-free wood-fired pizzas, as well as a ‘wild’ weekend brunch – what that will entail remains to be seen.
On the beverage side, there will be juices, herbal tonics and superfood smoothies, as well as natural wines and superfood cocktails made with organic alcohols and medicinal ingredients.
