This Big Rapids fast food restaurant is continuing its renovations

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids planners will hold a public hearing this week regarding a site plan for the renovation of one of the city’s fast food restaurants.

The hearing will focus on renovations to Wendy’s at 614 S. State St, and will take place during the planning commission meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Big Rapids City Hall, 226 N. Michigan Ave. .

Information provided to the planning commission indicated that the city had received a site plan application on behalf of Wendy’s for “the demolition and removal of the current structure and all sidewalk on the site”, and the construction of a new structure and a parking lot.

Engineers reviewing the company’s plans had one concern – that the plans include the installation of a new sanitary line that may require tearing up Clark Street, which was newly paved three years ago, according to reports.

In other matters, a joint session between the City of Big Rapids and the Planning Commissioners and Housing Commission will discuss upcoming housing projects in Big Rapids, including the planned development on Mechanic Street.

Housing commission deputy program director Linda Miller recently told the Mecosta County Board of Commissioners that they have 30 acres on Mechanic Street where they are planning a rental home project.

Currently, they are working on infrastructure plans, including the installation of roads, storm sewers, sidewalks, sanitary sewers and waterworks, which are estimated to cost $952,900.

Topics to be discussed at the joint meeting will include: how to expand opportunities for single-family families in the city; how the Mechanic Street project fits into the city’s long-term goals; proposal for cost sharing between the city and the housing commission; and where the funding could come from.
