The worst thing to do in a fast food restaurant — Eat This Not That

Compared to other restaurants and establishments, many fast food restaurants are still open for delivery and takeout during the coronavirus pandemic. While some only offer drive-thru, there are a few restaurants that allow customers to walk into the restaurant and order on the spot. Even if social distancing and health security measures are respected, there is one more step that customers and employees must take to ensure safety all around, and that is wearing a face mask. By not wearing a face mask, it’s easily the worst thing to do in a fast food joint right now.

Why is wearing a face mask important?

Experts have proven that COVID-19 can spread among other things even before symptoms appear in the affected person. This means that people can spread it unknowingly, so proper precautions should be taken.

Even looking at the data on how far a cough spreads is staggering. According to a video released by Finnish researchers, a cough can travel a few meters, leaving anyone in the area prone to catching the virus.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says wearing a mask can eliminate the distance coughs travel and protect those within six feet. They strongly recommend wearing a cloth face covering in public spaces to keep the virus from spreading, especially in areas with large numbers of people. This obviously includes when you pick up your burger and fries from McDonald’s.

The CDC strongly recommends using a cloth face covering and saving surgical masks for healthcare workers. They even have a complete online tutorial on how to easily make one at home and recommends washing it regularly. When removing the mask after use, be sure to wash your hands immediately and do not touch your nose, mouth or eyes. The CDC says using a cloth face mask will completely lose its value if it’s not combined with frequent hand washing and social distancing.

So while it may seem like you don’t have coronavirus, you never know if you’re carrying symptoms without even realizing it, which promotes the spread. By wearing a mask, you can protect the employees of your favorite fast food chains who are working tirelessly to help put food on our tables.
