PASADENA, Calif .– Old Town Pasadena is known for its main thoroughfare at Colorado Blvd., but a food scene is starting to take shape a block away. Vietnamese restaurant Paper Rice joined an increasingly fast-paced and laid-back scene on Union Street on Friday.

Tucked between shops serving tea, hot chicken and dirt dogs, Paper Rice specializes in personalized spring rolls in a way similar to Subway sandwiches, only with rice paper wraps filled with noodles, fresh vegetables. and herbs, and marinated proteins, such as grilled chicken, beef, pork belly, pork sausage and tofu.

What would you like to know

  • Paper Rice serves Vietnamese spring rolls and other street food
  • Diners can personalize their spring rolls in a way similar to Subway sandwiches, with fresh Vietnamese ingredients
  • Paper Rice is part of a growing casual scene on Union Street, one block from Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena old town
  • The restaurant’s grand opening is Friday

“This is how we eat at home,” said Lee Diep, co-owner of Paper Rice with her husband, Jens Kristen, and works with three of her eight siblings to get it started. “Vegetables and fresh herbs are always in our refrigerator. If we have leftover chicken or beef, we just wrap it up for a quick meal.

At Paper Rice, the wraps can be served like bowls, without the rice paper. Also on the menu: Vietnamese classics like Banh Mi sandwiches, sticky rice cakes and coffee served with sweetened condensed milk.

Diep has two older siblings who ran sit-down Vietnamese restaurants. She is currently working in the clothing industry as an importer, but owning her own restaurant has “always been my dream,” she said.

Her husband, Jens, worked in a building a few doors down from their new restaurant in the Old Town. Lunchtime, he said, was always a struggle.

“Here in Pasadena with the office environment, there was Il Fornaio for a sandwich, otherwise it was sitting down,” Kristen said. “If you only have an hour of lunch, you don’t have time to sit down and order lunch, especially when everyone is going.” That’s why we got into this idea: to offer something different from the traditional way of eating.

Paper Rice was slated to open in the spring, with meals indoors. But the pandemic has pushed seats toward tables at the front and around the corner in an alleyway that is now stocked with tables, chairs, umbrellas and tavern lights that several Union Street restaurants can share. Friday is its grand opening.

The Curry Noodle had an interesting depth, thanks to the mixture of yellow curry spices and coconut cream.

A taste of … @Siam Thai Street Food Cafe, 22 rue Heuheu, Taupo.

We had heard … The small Thai restaurant made delicious fresh meals.

We ordered… Pad Ke-maow ($ 17.50) and a yellow curry noodle soup ($ 17.50) with a side of fresh spring rolls ($ 14.50).

Fresh spring rolls, $ 14.50 for three.

Fresh spring rolls, $ 14.50 for three.

The pad ke-maow noodles were long, flat, and had a certain soy flavor. Large slices of fried pork were mixed in the dish, along with eggs and eggplant. A Google search revealed that the pad ke-maow are also known as “drunken noodles” – I guess they’ve absorbed the soy sauce. Because we ordered “hot” spices, chunks of red pepper were added as well.

The yellow curry had an interesting depth, thanks to the mixture of yellow curry spices and coconut cream. The chicken, shrimp and calamari paired well with the creamy soup. The pak choi and cabbage gave it a bit of crunch.

Fresh spring rolls probably wouldn’t be filling enough for a main course, but they were a delicious cleanser for the palate. Plump with lettuce, juicy chicken, fine noodles and herbs, we dipped them in the accompanying sweet sauce and dabbed them in breadcrumbs. With two courses costing $ 32.00, this is definitely a cheap night out.

The service… was friendly but succinct. The meals arrived 15 minutes after we ordered them.

The atmosphere…. @Siam has an unpretentious cafe vibe. Thai writing adorns the walls, as well as drapes and cultural objects. The hallway leading to the toilet has a water point and other interesting items. The Thai theme is simple but not overdone. There was no music, but it was certainly not quiet with the chatter of our guests.

If you are going to… We recommend that you ask for a moderately spicy level curry. The flavors are delicate and to be enjoyed – they don’t need to be sprinkled with chili. Vegetarians can request additional tofu and vegetables to replace meat, at no additional cost. The dishes arrive quickly and are light and fresh.
