If you ask someone to name an all-you-can-eat restaurant they’ve been to for a Sunday dinner or looking for a hangover cure, chances are they’ll mention Taybarns.

But unfortunately, and we’re breaking the news gently if you weren’t already aware… that’s no longer the case.

Opened in 2008, when Big Lukes faced little competition, Taybarns became one of those word-of-mouth success stories you heard about at work or from a friend and thought “god, what is this magical place they talk about?”

Or, chances are you’ve seen recordings on Facebook and were instantly jealous of the stacked high plates that were posted with them.

Taybarns branches in the North East included one just next to the Premier Inn, a short distance from Gateshead MetroCentre and on the South Shields road, also next to a hotel.

Sadly, Taybarns bit the dust in 2016, with all of its venues becoming Brewer’s Fayre pubs.

Some fans were so furious that they started a petition on Change.org to bring him back!

Taybarns was truly a slice, or rather a huge helping of buffet heaven, which at the same time, might be some diners’ idea of hell.

Upon entering the hard-to-miss building with a bright orange and green logo, a huge, brightly lit restaurant greeted you, which housed a large number of tables and booths and, of course, the main attraction – huge counters of buffet.

There really was, to use that famous cliché, something for everyone.

You can start with a burger and fries before moving on to curry; or maybe open your account with a carbonara, before filling your boots with a carvery or being a little less greedy and easing up with a soup, before considering your options and making sure to leave room for dessert – because there was plenty too!

There was no limit to the number of plates you could have, the only restriction was the time, which could sometimes depend on when you went and how busy the place was, but usually was two o’clock.

This meant that you often looked around and saw people on the verge of a food coma as they took a break from eating, yet determined to keep going and get their money’s worth.

Or, on the other hand, you’d watch someone come back to their table with yet another full plate and think “how is that even possible?”

Gone too soon or the stuff of nightmares? You decide!

No matter which branch of McDonald’s you visit, from Arnold to West Bridgford, they are always busy.

Across the UK, the fast food giant serves an average of around 3.5million customers every day, making it hard to imagine any of its burger restaurants closing due to lack of footfall. .

But that’s what happened in downtown Beeston.

McDonald’s opened on the High Road in 1987 but closed 30 years later because there were simply not enough people.

Although there were plenty of customers wanting a Big Mac at lunchtime it was much quieter at other times and when a McDonald’s drive-thru opened at Chilwell Retail Park it still most affected trade.

The empty unit became a furniture store for the charity Betel UK and in 2017 was transformed into a café-bar, the Bendigo Lounge.

McDonald’s wasn’t the only fast food restaurant to disappear from the High Road. KFC was also on the city’s main shopping street, but it closed in 1993 after weekly turnover fell well short of expectations.

The Beeston Centurians Boys Under 14 football team teamed up with McDonald’s in Beeston, in a sponsorship deal worth £500 in 2005

Today, the city offers a diverse mix of thriving cafes, cafes, takeaways and restaurants – both chains and local businesses, from Costa Coffee and Caffe Nero to Pudding Pantry, Greenhood Coffee House , Cartwheel, Birds and Circle Eatery.

Even though it’s been 15 years since McDonald’s closed, the topic remains a hotbed of debate between those who miss it – and those who don’t – when Nottinghamshire Live asked locals for their views.

Kylie Goodband said: “I remember McDonald’s on the High Road when I was growing up. I used to meet my friends there on a Saturday before I went shopping as a teenager. not many places to go now for teenagers. The cinema has just been built but there are only charity shops and little cafes in Beeston.

Steve Clarke thought it boosted the local economy. “It improved the town center commercially as many families visited Beeston rather than Nottingham or Derby for shopping and a ‘treat’ lunch.”

Beeston has Ohannes, a gourmet burger restaurant, but Shania Armstrong said: “It would be nice to have a McDonald’s, especially now that they also have alternatives for vegans. Some people can’t afford Ohannes, so having again an economical fast food would be great.”

It brings back fond memories for Andrew Hall, whose disabled son Joshua attended before his death.

He said: “It encouraged Josh to be independent in his wheelchair and drive to Beeston with his friends.

“It would be nice to have a Maccies again in Beeston, but really they need somewhere with space to park and drive through to make economic sense in a town the size of Beeston.”

Emma and Anthony Quinn, who run the Pudding Pantry in Beeston
Emma and Anthony Quinn, who run the Pudding Pantry in Beeston

Tahir Ahmed said it was part of his weekend routine as a boy. “We loved going to Beeston, going to the pet store and then going to McDonald’s, those are great memories. Even though it’s fast food and not the healthiest option, it’s still nice to have at your door. Going too often is how it can get unhealthy fast but everything in moderation.”

Geoff Eaton added: “There are plenty of adult outlets in Beeston, but not many for teenagers or young people with relatively cheap food and drink. I’ve never felt any antagonism towards McDonald’s and such. I like to use them once in a while. and I would certainly like a McDonald’s or KFC on the high street if there was enough demand to sustain them – and I think there would be, especially with deliveries.

However, not everyone cares to head to the High Road for a cheeseburger and chicken nuggets and for them, independent businesses win hands down.

Bee Warren said: “Good riddance to multinational junk food. Beeston is full of great, varied, independent food outlets that keep the town interesting and appealing (not another dreary old Clonetown) and keep the local economy going.”

Al Draper added: “Independent, well-run food and drink outlets offering healthy menus using responsible and traceable suppliers is not too much to ask of the High Street in 2022 is it not?”

Steve Beech commented: “In an age of globalization, I would say Beeston is thriving and has fewer large chain outlets than it did a decade ago.”

Anthony Quinn, who runs the Pudding Pantry in High Road, believes it is part of a nationwide trend, which has also seen chains such as Pizza Hut and Jamie’s Italian Close close.

“I think people are bored with what they serve. People want to spend their money and get something different. I think chains will always have commerce, but I think people will want to go somewhere where they will have a different experience.

“If you look at suburbs like Attenborough, Toton and Wollaton, it’s quite a wealthy area around Beeston and I think people like to spend their money locally.”

The family behind a shameful Chinese buffet for its poor food hygiene has pledged to turn it into a great dining experience again.

The Beijing banquet will close from Monday for five days for an overhaul.

And hard-working family manager Rui Lin said, “We as a team are focused on winning back our customers’ trust. We’ve all had sleepless nights thinking about it.

Renfrew’s giant restaurant was ransacked during a food inspection by Renfrewshire Council, which revealed 24 separate areas of concern.

The Lin family, which now runs a chain of five restaurants, is due to revive during the Chinese New Year celebrations which begin on February 1, to revive business at the 250-seat buffet.

Mr Lin added: ‘We want to continue to integrate ourselves within the Renfrewshire community, providing employment opportunities for locals and looking for opportunities to give back to the community, including providing free meals for the elderly. .

“Our entire team knows and appreciates our customers – and knows we need to maintain that standard to keep our customers.”

A month ago we revealed that a litany of issues had been uncovered at the Arkleston Road restaurant and an official Notice of Needed Improvement had been issued.

Complaints included flies buzzing in the kitchen, refrigerated food that was too hot, raw beef stored next to cooked chicken, a gravy-encrusted hob, and poorly cleaned refrigerators.

Food was also stored on the floor of a shipping container and a kitchen sink was stained with grease and food debris.

Fightback – The Arkleston Road restaurant will close for a week from this Monday

Beijing Banquet had already found a Pass certificate for its hygiene before closing next week.

Now the Lins, who have three daughters who all work in the business, want to “strive to maintain our level in the future”.

They have been in the food business for 25 years and the owners themselves often work in front of the house.

Mr. Lin revealed, “We are closing for five days from Monday January 31 to Friday February 4 to carry out interior renovations.

“We are planning to do a Chinese New Year special for every adult priced meal, we are offering a £5 voucher to be used in March, April and May.”

They say getting the restaurant back to its best will ensure jobs in the area and that the business is full of “wonderful, hardworking people, including managers, servers and chefs”.

During the shutdown, some interior fittings will be replaced and equipment maintained.

The chain is also based at Danderhall in Edinburgh, Sighthill in Glasgow, Grangemouth and a newly opened branch in Kilmarnock.

Mr. Lin added, “The Beijing Banquet team and I were very disappointed when we received the hygiene report. We aim for a high standard in our cuisine. We fixed the issues and made improvements immediately.

“We have also improved our day-to-day process to make it more robust, with additional training carried out for staff.

“We are passionate about bringing great value, great value food to families…and service with a smile.”

A popular Dublin street food restaurant has announced its expansion to Cork, and a stylish new bar is on the way.

Happy Endings on Aston Quay in the Big Smoke is still relatively new, but their street-inspired dishes have quickly made a name for them and the place is jamming most nights of the week.

The colorful joint has a wide range of options on their menu with things ranging from Ho Chi Minh Honey Tenders to Jimmy Burgers and plenty of vegan options.

They also have a wide range of drinks which includes a signature G&T, S&M (sake, mango puree, chillies and martini) and some very sweet shots.

As they turn their attention to Cork, they’ve decided to give it their own twist – and it looks like it will become more of a bar than a restaurant.

Crack Jenny’s Tavern is coming soon, but as of now they haven’t revealed exactly where it will be.

CorkBeo understands that they are in the “final stages” of their preparation and expect to be open around the beginning of February.

There are a lot of vacancies in the city right now, so anyone can guess.

All they’ve revealed so far is that it’s opening soon, and you can follow them here.

The owner of a popular buffet restaurant has been left with a huge bill after a series of break-ins.

Syed Rahman, who was awarded the British Empire Medal for helping to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity, has seen his restaurant, Chef & Spice, robbed four times in the past six months.

The latest round of famed Indian, Chinese and British restoration yesterday morning saw the total repair bill reach around £8,000.

On top of that he spent £6,000 on a new CCTV system but failed to stop the crime wave at the restaurant.

He said: “The cost is unbearable. We’re insured, but with the cost of overpayments and the effect it would have on our premiums, it’s not worth claiming.

“With the recent lockdowns, the industry is already suffering.

“The burglaries could have caused the closure of any other restaurant.”

The latest break-in was at 2.50am on Thursday morning when the burglars forced their way through the front door using some metallic object before stealing the cash registers – containing around £150 in cash .

They also left with two tablets and a few bottles of alcohol.

The broken door

Two other doors were also badly damaged as the criminals tried to get inside.

Previous burglaries have also resulted in costly damage to doors and thefts of cash and alcohol from the premises.

Syed, who also owns Cuisine of India in Wigston, said: “There have been no arrests. Every time the police come to take a look, but CCTV footage hasn’t identified anyone until here.”

Over the years, Syed’s two restaurants have helped raise nearly £700,000 for local and national good causes, earning her inclusion in the Queen’s New Year’s Honors list in 2020.

A police spokesman said: “Shortly after 3.15am on Thursday a report was received that a restaurant in Hinckley Road had been burgled.

“Officers went to the scene and found on arrival that a quantity of money had been taken from a cash box. Two Samsung tablets and two bottles of alcohol had also been taken.

“Police would like to speak to anyone in the area who witnessed one or more people acting in an unusual or suspicious manner at the time the incident occurred.

“Neighborhood Policing Area (NPA) officers will continue to undertake further proactive foot patrols around Andrewes Estate.

“Anyone with a dash cam or CCTV footage is also asked to contact the police, quoting reference 22*036722.”
