‘Selby School Supply Buffet’ helps over 100 Sarasota students
Baskets of workbooks, parcels of pencils and a tote to carry them were all available at the “Selby School Supply Buffet” hosted by the Selby Public Library on July 30 and August 1. More than 100 Sarasota County students picked up must-have supplies, checking off items on each of their school’s must-have lists.
“The Selby Public Library Youth Service provides snacks and lunches for children all summer long,” said Heather Tweed, Youth Service Librarian. “If families can’t even afford food, how are they supposed to provide a full list of school supplies? for the year?”
With a room full of free supplies, students “shopped” at the buffet for items on their lists. In addition to providing funding for supplies, the Friends of Selby Public Library also provided bins to transport supplies and collected donations over the summer.
“Friends are committed to supporting library events and programs that meet a need in our community with the help of our volunteers, members and generous donations from the public,” said Friends executive director. , DJ Kramer.
The Selby School Supply Buffet also provided students with information about Brainfuse, which offers free online tutoring for all levels, as well as article writing feedback, test prep for SAT, ACT, GED exams and US citizenship, and professional resources. Brainfuse can be accessed via scgov.net/library.
The Selby Public Library Youth Service hopes to make the school supply buffet an annual event. Goals for next year’s event include more supplies available for other families, a wider variety of supplies, and backpacks for all students. Friends hope to double their funding for the event for next year and are asking those who wish to support their efforts to become a Friends member by logging on to selbylibraryfriends.org or stopping by their bookstore located in the rotunda of the library.
“Even buying a book for just under a quarter from our bookstore helps fulfill our mission and makes Selby Public Library a beautiful, vibrant and vital institution in our community,” Kramer said.
The Friends of Selby Public Library partners with the Selby Public Library to develop services, provide programs, and advocate library resources in service of the greater Sarasota community.
