Review: @Siam Thai Street Food Cafe, Taupo

A taste of … @Siam Thai Street Food Cafe, 22 rue Heuheu, Taupo.
We had heard … The small Thai restaurant made delicious fresh meals.
We ordered… Pad Ke-maow ($ 17.50) and a yellow curry noodle soup ($ 17.50) with a side of fresh spring rolls ($ 14.50).
The pad ke-maow noodles were long, flat, and had a certain soy flavor. Large slices of fried pork were mixed in the dish, along with eggs and eggplant. A Google search revealed that the pad ke-maow are also known as “drunken noodles” – I guess they’ve absorbed the soy sauce. Because we ordered “hot” spices, chunks of red pepper were added as well.
The yellow curry had an interesting depth, thanks to the mixture of yellow curry spices and coconut cream. The chicken, shrimp and calamari paired well with the creamy soup. The pak choi and cabbage gave it a bit of crunch.
Fresh spring rolls probably wouldn’t be filling enough for a main course, but they were a delicious cleanser for the palate. Plump with lettuce, juicy chicken, fine noodles and herbs, we dipped them in the accompanying sweet sauce and dabbed them in breadcrumbs. With two courses costing $ 32.00, this is definitely a cheap night out.
The service… was friendly but succinct. The meals arrived 15 minutes after we ordered them.
The atmosphere…. @Siam has an unpretentious cafe vibe. Thai writing adorns the walls, as well as drapes and cultural objects. The hallway leading to the toilet has a water point and other interesting items. The Thai theme is simple but not overdone. There was no music, but it was certainly not quiet with the chatter of our guests.
If you are going to… We recommend that you ask for a moderately spicy level curry. The flavors are delicate and to be enjoyed – they don’t need to be sprinkled with chili. Vegetarians can request additional tofu and vegetables to replace meat, at no additional cost. The dishes arrive quickly and are light and fresh.
