It would be easy to argue that fried chicken is the most iconic of all the famous Southern dishes. It’s not an easy dish to master, especially in a restaurant setting where you would cook batch after batch.

As a result, really good fried chicken is not easy to find.

There are a few places on the coast that I love, but when I need a dose of Southern food, I head to the Hartz Chicken Buffet in Ocean Springs. It’s a well-run buffet, and fresh food keeps coming out of the kitchen to greet hungry guests. You are just not going to find food that has been under the heat lamp for too long in Hartz.

One of the main reasons I love Hartz is the southern-style accompanying items that are available every day. Last time I looked there were over a dozen and included classics like mashed potatoes and gravy, kidney beans, green beans, turnip greens and okra. fried, to name a few of my favorites.

But my all time favorite, and I don’t know of any other restaurant that actually, is the pea salad. A classic pea salad is made with green peas, cheese, bacon and onion and a dressing made with mayo, sour cream and vinegar, but of course Hartz has his own recipe, and I knew that it was better not to ask for it. He’s the star of the show as far as I’m concerned.

Harz Fried Chicken is always tender, chewy, well seasoned, and not overcooked. The crust is crisp and perfect in every way.

For just ten dollars, you get two pieces of chicken and three sides, but if you want to taste a few more veggies, it’s inexpensive to add one or two more sides. I also love their mac and cheese, green beans, and green vegetables. This is a big meal for a bachelor who, more often than not, does not have time to prepare vegetables. There are also always a few desserts to choose from, usually some sort of cobbler. They are always delicious.

Hartz has been around since 1975, so you know they do it well, but go see for yourself. If you drop by just after 5 p.m. you might see me walk out with a loaded takeout tray. Hartz also installed plastic partitions between tables as a safety measure for diners during the coronavirus pandemic.
