Opening of the international buffet at Poughkeepsie in the old Golden Corral

Golden Corral’s signature red and yellow, known to Route 9 drivers as an eyesore for longer than it was a functioning restaurant, is gone.

But while the final exit of the buffet chain itself left the town of Poughkeepsie with an empty building for almost two years, the exit from the chain’s familiar exterior has led to something new.

Sporting a gray and white paint job, International Buffet & Grill opened on Tuesday, bringing a new option for buffet dining in Dutchess County.

International Buffet, located at 2345 South Road, offers an eclectic selection of cuisine, including American, Mexican, Italian and Dominican. The buffet also offers a chocolate fountain and weekend breakfast times.

The besieged Golden Corral had not been opened since the start of the pandemic. Its future had looked uncertain after a “for sale” sign was placed outside the restaurant earlier this year, but the company said it was only a temporary closure.

It had previously been closed for about 20 months under a previous owner, and has been a source of frustration for diners wanting to visit, with many disappointed when they could.

The opening of Golden Corral was first announced in Poughkeepsie in June 2015, with an opening slated for summer 2016. This ultimately happened on January 27, 2017, but it closed 11 days later for ” eliminate all problems “from its operation. It closed again at the end of March of the same year, amid concerns over service and sanitation, and accusations that it had failed to pay several employees.

It reopened in November 2018 under new owner and remained open for approximately 16 months. The restaurant was listed as “temporarily closed” in March 2020, according to a post on its Facebook page.
