Newcastle Indian crowned street food restaurant of the year

A popular Newcastle Indian restaurant has been crowned Indian Street Food Restaurant of the Year at the English Curry Awards.

My Delhi in Newcastle city center battled stiff competition from nine high-profile restaurants across the country to win the title.

It opened in May 2019 and was designed by brothers Shah Elahi and Shah Amin, Gaurav Goyal, Neha Goyal and executive chef Gaurav Dayal.

The restaurant offers a unique dining experience with a quirky interior offering authentic Indian street food, from the popular roadside stalls of northern India to the royal kitchens of the Mughal Empire.

Director Elahi Shah Amin said, “We were up against some of the best street food restaurants in the country, so it’s amazing to win such a prestigious award on the national stage.

“We wanted to create something new and different, something very authentic to the British Curry House scene, to create a restaurant that would take people on a journey where they could experience delicious Indian street food right here in Newcastle.

“The last year and a half with the pandemic has been very difficult, but we have come out of it stronger, and that makes holding this award even more special.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without our fantastic customers, the My Delhi team past and present, and all the love and support from our friends and families.

“We want Newcastle to continue to thrive and honor its reputation as a great foodie destination.

“We are working on opening new branches in the northeast and further afield, so watch this space.”

Those behind My Delhi say they have an “unwavering pride in Indian cuisine” which is evident in the menu and restaurant.

The restaurant also employs innovative and passionate Delhi chefs who have grown up with the cuisine they now cook for their customers.

The restaurant’s electronic ‘windows’ help capture the local atmosphere with scenes of buzzing Delhi as well as the sounds of horns, beeps and the bustle that make the capital such a vibrant city.

There’s even an Instragam-friendly Tuk Tuk where customers can have their picture taken.

My Delhi enjoys a unique nut-free policy that has been in place since January 2020 to ensure everyone has access to delicious foods and flavors regardless of allergies.
