Pop quiz: What’s the best way to celebrate the top 50 restaurants in the world’s largest continent? Answer: By asking chefs from all over the world to cook a 12-course meal, all to be served in one long, delicious evening!

That’s exactly what happened at Le Du restaurant in Silom, Bangkok a few weeks ago, where seven award-winning restaurant chefs from Singapore and Thailand came together to celebrate the best of Asia, and one another. These included Chef Pichaya Utarntharm from Potong, Chef Han Li Guang from Labyrinth in Singapore (famous for his Chilli Crab), Johanne Siy from Lolla, Sri Lankan Rishi Naleendra from Cloudstreet Singapore, Dej Kewkacha from Kyo Bar, Sun Kim of Meta and the house chef, Thitid Tassanakajohn aka Chef Tuna of Le Du and Nusara.

Surprise party

I was an accidental visitor who happened to be in the right place at the right time. I had arrived in Bangkok the day before and followed Thailand’s “Covid Test and Go” program. (Government rules required all international arrivals to be picked up at the airport in a van, driven to a drive-thru Covid testing facility, then quarantined in a hotel room until 12 p.m. or until upon arrival of their negative results. Hotels are cheap, but this private pick-up and test cost me up to half of my stay!)

My results came in six hours flat, and while I amused myself tirelessly in my room ordering Grab food deliveries (brought out by hotel security personnel, who kept a distance of two arms), I I also used the free time to chat with friends.

One such catch-up call was with one of India’s most respected names in the food industry, renowned food critic and author, Rashmi Uday Singh.

“What are you doing in Bangkok, champ? she asked in characteristic Rashmi style. For those unaware, Rashmi is very active and extremely popular on Instagram, where her travels and pleasant attitude never fail to create buzz.

“Uh…I just needed to get away,” I replied.

“So why not go for the top 50 awards in Asia? They happen in Bangkok the day after!

Rashmi Uday Singh has been India’s chairman of the prestigious World’s 50 Best for several years now. A few minutes after our conversation, his counterpart in Thailand, a Mr. Litti Kewkacha, texted me. “The awards show is Tuesday afternoon, but why don’t you join us tomorrow night for dinner at Du?” Seven chefs from Singapore and Thailand come together to cook a meal!

Minutes later, Chef Thon from Le Du restaurant, Asia’s number 4 restaurant this year, was on the phone, noting my shellfish allergies and understanding what I could eat and what I couldn’t eat.

“For me, marriage is a beautiful journey that should be enjoyed every day as partners and best friends. It is a work in progress that should be nurtured with care, love, understanding and lots of respect for each other. In fact, for me, respect is even more important than love,” says Jaya.

“I really admire our Indian culture when it comes to marriage,” adds Deepak. “For us, weddings are like a union of families, their customs and cultures, and the mutual respect for all of that. I am very happy to say that our families get along very well and are fully supportive of all our decisions. I had always been very clear that I would marry a girl of my choice and my parents always respected that. For me, respect, care and love are the basis of a relationship and I am happy that our relationship is in line with all of this.

Before it became clear that Deepak’s injury would prevent him from competing in the IPL, the couple planned to get married after the season ended. Although they have time now because Deepak is not working this season, they have decided not to speed up their wedding festivities.

“We had planned to have our wedding in June after the IPL was over and we are sticking to that plan,” says Deepak. “As it will be a very important day in our lives, we want to celebrate with our families and friends. And the wedding will take place in Agra, the city of love and my home.

There will be a reception to follow the wedding, but it could be in another city, Jaya says.

After their marriage, the couple intend to settle in Jaipur, where they plan to build their own house. “I played for Rajasthan, spent most of my childhood there and spent more time in Jaipur than Agra,” says Deepak. “I don’t like Delhi at all and Agra is not suitable for Jaya for her job. But Jaipur is perfect for both of us. People know me there and we will remain close to our two families.

A life in Jaipur may also mean a little less intrusion from paparazzi and over-eager fans, issues that Jaya probably has to learn to deal with.

“As for the female fans, I’m not worried at all. It’s up to Deepak to deal with them,” Jaya says confidently. “And as for being labeled as a WAG [the sexist Wives and Girlfriends label given to the spouses and significant others of male sportspeople] is concerned, well, I have my own identity and personality. I have no problem being called Deepak’s wife because that’s what I’m going to be, but my profile doesn’t end there. I have already started my own company to develop a gaming ecosystem where fans transform from spectators to engaged team players making strategic decisions by leveraging real-world sports insights. In fact, I’m just starting to develop the first app, which will have cricket at its heart. »

Deepak is horrified at the thought of Jaya being reduced by the media to a WAG.

“I would never want my wife to be known by my name,” he says firmly. “She has her own identity as an entrepreneur. The media are responsible for how people refer to sports spouses. Most wives and girlfriends of cricketers are self-employed. For example, Anushka Sharma, married to Virat Kohli, has her own identity. This is how I want my wife to be known.

Also at the table, India’s most brilliant young chef and Brunch HT columnist, Prateek Sadhu, whom I admired and encouraged, but only met for the second time today.

At the other tables are Gauri Devidayal and Jay Yousuf from The Table, Mumbai, whose restaurant surprised them by entering the Top 100 list of the best in Asia this year, Rohit Khattar from Indian Accent, chef Himanshu Saini from Tresind Studio and Darshan Munidasa from the Crab Ministry. .

India for the win

Cut to the awards ceremony held in an Academy Awards style ballroom at the Pullman King Power Hotel. The man behind the World’s 50 Best brand, William Drew, is in good spirits as he welcomes everyone to an on-court event to celebrate the best of the best. But the one group of people who seem happiest in the room are Indian chefs and restaurateurs.

While three Indian restaurants made the Top 50 this year, seven more made the Top 100, and that’s reason enough to celebrate.

Interestingly, Chef Prateek Sadhu’s mask propelled Indian Accent to the post, becoming the top Indian restaurant this year at No. 21. Indian Accent followed at No. 22. But all was not lost for the fine dining restaurant. India’s favorite, as Indian Accent’s sister company Comorin made it onto the 51 to 100 list.

At No. 49 appeared Megu near Leela Palace, filling the position Wasabi vacated a few years ago. Young chef Shumbham Thakur beamed as he received the surprise award.

The other seven Indian restaurants included Karavali, Bangalore, at No. 59, Bukhara, New Delhi, at No. 66, Comorin, Gurugram, at No. 69, Dum Pukht, New Delhi, at No. 73, Avartana, Chennai, at No. No. 79, Americano, Mumbai, at No. 80 and The Table, Mumbai, at No. 85.

As chefs, restaurateurs and foodies partied into the night, one couldn’t help but marvel at the camaraderie these ‘competitors’ shared among themselves. It just showed how hospitality is an industry full of nice people who want to make a living by making people happy. Here’s more of that!.
