Chinese Donuts (Asian Buffet Hearty Donuts Recipe)

Sometimes in life there is no point in taking shortcuts. One of these times? Home repair time. Our house is over 100 years old and over the last century it has undergone more than a few shortcuts. There’s tape and glue in places where there should never have been. And let’s not even talk about the bridge situation, which led to crumbling stairs and possums (yes, POSSUMS!) sneaking into our house (yes, IN OUR HOUSE).

Home repairs are no place to take shortcuts. Donuts though? Completely appropriate.

Chinese Donuts Make Easy Treats

These Asian buffet style donuts are ridiculously easy to make. I would be embarrassed to share the recipe with you if it wasn’t so good. All you need are 3 simple ingredients!

Ingredients for chinese donuts

  1. A little oil for frying
  2. A box of refrigerated cookie dough
  3. Sugar

Who knew cookie dough made amazing donuts, and why did it take me 28 years to figure it out?

How to make chinese donuts

Seriously, all you do is drop little balls of dough into hot oil, fry them until golden brown, then roll these beauties in sugar.

The resulting donut holes taste just like the donuts you find at Asian buffets, except they’re better because you can eat them while they’re fresh and piping hot rather than after several hours at a time. languish under heat lamps next to various meats in sauce.

I’ll be honest I am enough generous with the sugar on these. When I was a kid, I may or may not have secretly poured extra sugar from a sugar packet over the Chinese donuts at the buffet. #no shame. When I’m home, I just make sure I have a nice thick layer on it.

They’re so fun and easy to make, and it’s a great recipe for the kids (maybe stick them to the rolling station and NOT the hot oil frying station). They are also incredibly versatile. I stuffed sautéed apples into a few of these and rolled them in cinnamon sugar, but they would also be fabulous dipped in chocolate or salted caramel sauce (swooooon).

The good news is that these donuts are so quick to make, you’ll have plenty of time to do your home repairs the right way. And believe me, you want to do them the right way.
