A restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina has been named one of the best in the country.

A humble South Carolina soul restaurant has been named one of the best places to eat in the country.

Hannibal’s Soul Kitchen in Charleston is among the best restaurants in America that the New York Times is “raving about right now.”

Hannibal’s was the only South Carolina Restaurant to do list, which the newspaper said was created after sending “reviewers, reporters and editors across the country to find the 50 fastest growing and most delicious restaurants of 2021.” From coast to coast, restaurants that serve a variety of dishes have been recognized.

“Some are classics, still excellent after decades,” The New York Times reported on Tuesday. “Others are at their peak, restaurants at their practiced heights. And still others are newcomers, fearlessly navigating their way through the most difficult time the restaurant industry is likely to face.

Restaurants have been hit hard during the coronavirus pandemic, with some forced to close and now struggling to find the right staff.

Hannibal received a nod for his blue crab dish, with the meat “pan-fried to be crispy while retaining chunks of soft flesh, generously piled on white rice”.

In addition to serving crab, the restaurant says its menu features other Gullah Seafood and Geechee-style meat dishes and sides.

The Gullah Geechee are descendants of slaves brought from Africa to work along the coast of South Carolina in the 1700s. their traditional dishes have spread to the area, including okra, shrimp and grits, according to the tourist website Discover South Carolina.

Similar to restaurant namesake “Hannibal” Huger – whose the name evokes the man remembered for leading an army that inflicted a shocking defeat on the Romans in the year 216 – the restaurant says he overcame all odds to succeed.

“Hannibal’s Kitchen isn’t one of those fancy restaurants with an exquisite atmosphere and finery, but it serves up some of the best soul food cuisine in the area,” the restaurant said on its website. “Owner LJ Huger says the family-operated restaurant has been “feeding the soul of the town” for over 40 years because what the restaurant lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in taste.”

This isn’t the first time a South Carolina restaurant has made a national list.

Halls Chophouse in Charleston, Jack of Cups Saloon in Folly Beach, and Rainbow Donuts in York all made Yelp’s Top 100 America’s Restaurants list this year. For these rankings, the restaurant ratings website in February said it asked users which restaurants they couldn’t get enough of and rated the most popular spots.

This time around, other restaurants in the Carolinas named among New York Times Favorites were Chai Pani in Asheville and Kindred in Davidson, reported The Charlotte Observer.
